It gives you a chance to have the world, or at least part of it, at your fingertips.

A Catalyst to Your Degree: For many students, a semester or summer school in Europe can serve as a catalyst to your degree. If you are majoring in a foreign language, foreign relations, or international studies, for instance, a study abroad Europe program can give you valuable experience and potential connections. If you are majoring in history, art, or architecture, a study abroad Europe program can give you valuable insight, inspiration, and understanding of the birthplace of many movements and events.

An Improvement to Your Resume: While you might not be thinking of jobs as you study abroad, the job market will be waiting for you when graduation happens. Unfortunately, this is not always a good thing: the market, especially at presently, is highly competitive. Thus, your resume needs something to help it stand out. A study abroad experience can help you do this. Studying abroad tells potential employers that you are not a afraid to adapt to new changes, to take chances, and to travel outside of your comfort zone.

Maori Education The Path to Our Future

Maori Education The Path to Our Future

Figures recently released by the Ministry of Education show that there has been a steady growth in Maori tertiary enrolments. However, although there has been growth in enrolment figures, this growth has been attributed primarily to growth in attendance at Wananga and educational institutes that empower Maori to embrace not only the learning of their history and culture, but teach mainstream educational courses in a manner that appeals to the style and formality of the Maori culture itself.

However, the figures also indicate that Maori are less likely to enrol in tertiary education facilities during the core tertiary ages of 18 to 24. According to the University of Waikato, a number of factors have been identified as affecting the successful participation of Maori students in tertiary education. These include the transition and adaption to unfamiliar environments and learning procedures, inappropriate support systems, financial barriers and a lack of social and academic support. A number of studies have highlighted the high number of students who are first generation participants in tertiary education, for whom adjusting to the practices and rules of a new environment without the support of whanau (family) is difficult.

Nonetheless, the emerging signs and trends of increasing Maori participation in tertiary education institutes are encouraging. Further research into the role of Maori education has highlighted the need to tailor the learning style, experience and environment to suit the aspirations of the Maori culture and the value of the whanau.

According to a review of Maori education conducted by MAI in 2007, the further education of the individuals, both young and old, is essential for the continued development and future prosperity of Maori and the culture. With a better educated population base, the review proposes that Maori will be better able to determine their own futures and prosper, both economically and socially. Marginal educational records and enrolments affect the future prospects of the individual and the whanau. However, several initiatives are proving very successful in respect to enrolment and completion rate of Maori students. These include empowering Maori in the community to take on leading roles in education institutions, developing role models that young Maori aspire to replicate.

Leading tertiary providers in New Zealand have realised these facts and have created tertiary environments that not only cater for the general public, but provide specific learning styles, teachings and learning environments that are conducive to the continued promotion of Maori education. Those who are serious about Maori education have gone so far as to provide customary Maori buildings, such as the marae, which is not only the focus of the whanau, but learning and education. Plus some institutions provide a”Manaakitanga” programme designed to support students’ success in their studies.

Good Study Skills Are Crucial For College Students

Good Study Skills Are Crucial For College Students

College has so much going on: away from home, no parents, new living arrangements. What makes this so much more complicated is not having good study habits. Poor study habits just makes college life that much more challenging. Going to college opens up a whole slew of new experiences. You got new friends, new town and new challenges. One of these new challenges is knowing how to study properly. This might be the biggest challenge of all.

It’s a common experience for college students to realize that being able to study well really helps make university life successful and enjoyable. It’s also common that being a good studier is perceived as a natural talent or a ninja-like skill.

Neither natural talent nor ninja training explains it. It really comes down to habits.

Freshmen show up at university with what they already have. They bring their grades, experiences and study methods. Because of their abilities, many students developed ways to study that worked fine in high school but are not sufficient for the rigors of university classes.

As these freshman get into the college experience, they realize university classes are at a different level than what high school was. In addition, they find that the study habits they brought from their high school classes won’t work anymore and that improvement is vital in order to perform well academically in college.

A complicating factor to developing better study habits is that there is little breathing room for college students to reboot how they study. The pace and volume of classroom work and preparation is such that changing to better ways of studying is very difficult to squeeze in.

Perhaps putting this situation another will help clarify what I mean. A high school student competitively in high school and does very well in her meets because her of natural ability compared to her opponents.

This superior runner practices, yes, but no more than the girls who finish behind her. Her first place finishes are due to what she was given not from what she does to prepare.

The top notch runner now goes to college to compete and sees that things are different. Now the competition has her talent, too, and her standings begin to fall off from what she is used to knowing.

Our high school runner understands her training needs to improve. She just doesn’t know when she’ll be able to do the improving. She competes weekly which restricts her available time. So she needs to continue her high school level training to keep her results from getting any worse.

A better choice for her would be to get some help to make the change sooner rather than later.

It is a similar situation with getting good study habits. Some outside help can really help. Getting assistance with college level study skills is very similar to our track scenario. It can happen sooner rather than later.

Choosing to Study Abroad

Choosing to Study Abroad

Most students know someone who’s gone oversees to study abroad but most have never considered the option for themselves. There are many advantages to spending a semester in another country, but is this right for you or your child? First and foremost, what is study abroad? The basic premise is to travel to another country and continue normal studies while also learning about the country’s culture, history and language. Students who study abroad must normally have a certain amount of school credit hours to qualify for the opportunity; must be willing to be gone for either a semester, summer or year; and must typically pay their own way unless they’re on scholarship. Before deciding to take this journey, both students and parents are interested in hearing the advantages of this option. So what are they?

One major benefit in most people’s minds is the opportunity to experience a different culture for a short period of time. The student will have the chance to become accustomed to new foods, arts, music, history, political systems and holidays. Another plus is if you decide to travel to a country whose national language you’ve studied, you’ll be able to gain first-hand experience putting that language to use. The best way to become fluent in a language is to put it into practice; what better way to do that than to rehearse it in its natural environment? Having this kind of practice with a foreign language can look very good to a perspective college, grad school and even to future jobs.

The ultimate way to ensure you’re choosing the right plan is to be absolutely comfortable with the overall idea. If you don’t like leaving home for a couple of days, odds are high that adjusting to studying abroad would take some time. It’s critical to weigh your options. Obviously it’s natural to fear becoming homesick, but most students who’ve chosen to study abroad find that they’re so busy participating in amazing new opportunities that the time flies by and home is a faraway thought.

If you’ve weighed your options and decided the journey will benefit you, be sure to check out your options as far as programs go. Most high schools and colleges offer their own programs, but if you choose to go another route or if you’re home schooled then you’ll want to do plenty of Internet research. Terra Education is one option for those wishing to participate in a high school study abroad program. Regardless of which choice you go with, remember that you’re experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and you should take full advantage of it. Put yourself out there and gain as much as you can from from the experience. Safe travels!

Scientific Research Into The Benefits Of Montessori Education

Scientific Research Into The Benefits Of Montessori Education

The University of Virginia conducted a variety of studies on academic performance, social skills, behavioral tendencies and psychological norms of Montessori students who were five and twelve years of age. They then did comparable research on non-Montessori school children of the same ages. The study was recently published in the academic journal Science by Dr Angeline Lillard, one of the universitys professors of psychology at their Charlottesville campus. The results of the study lead to surprising headlines on mainstream media sources such as the Guardian in the United Kingdom and CBS in the United States.

In brief, the Montessori Method was developed over nearly four decades by the education and psychology specialist Maria Montessori. Her research and implementation of what is now the Montessori Method started at the beginning of the 20th century and has continued to be implemented in its purist forms and in other cases contextually adapted to meet social and cultural norms. The core principles stay the same regardless of contextualization though. First and foremost, the student is provided a safe and stimulating environment where they are granted the authority to follow their natural instinct to gravitate towards wanting to learn. Teachers guide students through the self-directed learning process and play the role as the facilitator and observer more so than the traditional teacher model. Sharing, fairness and inter-age socialization are encouraged while the system downplays the need for competition and stress in the classroom. Testing and grading is not a standard within the original methodology, but in countries such as the United States, children do complete the national standard exams. The culture of a Montessori school is sharply different than non-Montessori schools but the goal of educating the students is the same. But which is more effective?

Researchers from The University of Virginia found that the five year olds at Montessori schools had better math and reading skills and tested better than those pupils at public and non-Montessori private schools. Even without regular testing (as in public schools), the Montessori students were able to spell, utilize grammar and execute punctuation better. Their socialization and problem solving skills were vastly more developed over their counterparts as well.

Although Montessori twelve year olds scored similarly in math and reading skills on examinations, those who were observed and tested were significantly more creative and sophisticated with their writing skills. But due to the inter-age interaction and methodology of the Montessori school system, children demonstrated a more secure sense of self, and scored much higher on social and behavioral tests.

The research suggests that the Montessori Method is in fact the better education system, but Dr. Lillards main conclusion is that she is looking forward to further researching the topic nationally and potentially internationally to come up with more conclusive evidence.

Singapore A World-class Education Hub With Sky-high Tuition Costs

Singapore A World-class Education Hub With Sky-high Tuition Costs

Singapores education system has been described as “world-leading” and was among those picked out for commendation by British education minister, Michael Gove, last year. Perhaps, the governments efforts in providing each child with schooling opportunities are indeed laudable, but still, parents complain of the rigid and competitive nature of this very system. So maybe, the most nerve-wrecking, mind-boggling issue on every Singaporean parents mind is how can my child be one of the best? Surely, the recent implementation of Teach Less, Learn More does nothing to ease this tension, and to study independently seems not to be the nature of our law-abiding kids, whom our Western counterparts tend to dismiss as lacking the inquisitive spirit and/or innovation. But it seems our parents have found an alternative to induce this spirit through intensive tuition.

H2 Mathematics Tuition and H2 Physics Tuition are two of the most common subjects being sort after by Singapores high school students to be tutored. A Sunday Times poll conducted by the Straits Times found that out of 100 students, 97 students are attending tuition. Singaporean parents are enrolling their children in multiple tuition centers, many willing to pay up to S$3000 a month engaging multiple Top Tutors especially for higher level education, e.g., Junior College and/or higher. With the aim of establishing a robust Science Hub, Singaporean parents see the need for their child to be equipped with the necessary, and hence are willing to pay, regardless the price, for crucial science stream subjects, investing in H2 Mathematics Tuition and H2 Physics Tuition.

There are parents who prefer to engage Top Tutors for private home tuition, which are especially common for high school students dealing with more complex and difficult subjects. The rates for Top Tutors can range from S$35/hr to S$80/hr depending on the popularity and level of the tutor. Group or class tuition is also increasingly available in Singapore. Not only is it a cheaper alternative, they also feel that their child will benefit and learn more from interacting with others while asking questions during tuition a form of inducing an inquisitive spirit. The class size of a typical H2 Physics Tuition or H2 Mathematics Tuition classes are often small for effective teaching and learning.

It may be true that many successful people come from well-off family background, and indeed, their parents may have the capital to equip them with the necessary, but how many outlier cases have we heard, where children from working class families still made their way to the top, for instance, 42nd US President Bill Clinton. Perhaps, who makes it out successful and who does not, depends again largely on the individual.
